Iraq's
central government has not reached a deal with the Kurdistan Regional
Government to recognize contracts the Kurds signed with foreign oil
companies . "The Iraqi Oil Ministry considers the contracts signed by the
KRG as illegal and void," a senior Iraqi Oil Ministry official said on
Wednesday. Unconfirmed reports of such a deal had caused share prices in
Norwegian oil firm DNO to soar. The official said the Kurdish contracts
remained the main stumbling block to agreeing a draft national oil law that
will open up the country's energy sector to foreign investment.

The terrorist
state of Turkey sentenced Kurdish politician Leyla Zana to two years'
imprisonment for praising the Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan. The charges
stem from a speech she made in March 2007 at a Kurdish festival, counting
Ocalan among Kurdish national leaders along with Jalal Talabani and Maossud
Barzani. "I am grateful to those three leaders... They all have a place in
the hearts and minds of the Kurds," said the former
Nobel peace prize nominee, zana. |
