US Should Take PKK Off Its Terrorist List

By: Peter Eyre

April 14, 2008

I was so happy to read that the EU court has taken the PKK off the terrorist list.
I have worked in Kurdistan for some time and have some friends from that country including some currently living Kurdistan. I would like to express my objection to the US Government for maintaining this stance against the PKK.

It would appear that the US changes sides on a regular basis when it is in their best interests. The pattern evolves when circumstances change....as an example in the military sense when a matter involves a fellow NATO member the US takes side and support them. The reason for such quick changes is obvious.

The US are not prepared to clash with their own forces and therefore turn a blind eye when such a country violates the sovereignty of another. This type of action is extremely sad and one could ask the question how would they feel if forces kept crossing the US borders as and when they choose to and carry out acts of aggression. How would they feel if such a violation took place when another country set up base within the confines of their country on an almost permanent basis such as the army base at Sersing? I also ask the question as to why this has been allowed by the Iraqi's and the Kurdish Government themselves? Finally we come to the question of commercial gain or the quest for oil.

Again the US can change their support as and when it is in their best commercial interests. As an example they were very supportive of all Kurds during the initial invasion as were the British and other nations and the base in question Sersing became a stepping stone for their forces during the invasion. We now see these same people turn a blind eye to such groups as the PKK, who were their friends at one stage and now label them as terrorist. The PKK also attracted attention from the US and many other governments at the time with their knowledge and location of the oil within the land, including the UN who met with many Kurdish tribal people at the time.

Now you have a despicable situation where one one hand the US call them terrorist and then send very senior officials such as Dick Cheney and Condoleezza Rice to Kurdistan. When will the US identify that they have got it wrong and fall in line with the verdict of the European Court that has removed the PKK from the terrorist list and stated that their actions are perfectly justified based on their historical struggle for Kurdistan and its people. Well done the PKK and I sincerely hope that one day you will receive justice and recover your pride and become part of the international wider community.

Finally I would like to see more of the PKK on the Web...do they have a web page in Kurdistan? Kind Regards
