U.S. To Finance,
Build Orphanage In Kurdish City

The United States is building a combined orphanage and senior center in Arbil,
the capital of Iraq’s Kurdistan region, for $3.7 million.
The building is expected to house 165 boys, 180 girls and 60 elderly people,
according to a news release issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Plans call for a big multipurpose hall featuring music rooms and computer labs.
Surrounding the hall will be six three-story houses and a play yard.
Accommodations for seniors will be equipped with an elevator, wider doors and
handicapped-accessible tubs and showers.
Each residential house has a kitchenette “so that residents can have their tea
or just feel at home,” said Gary York, the Corps’ area engineer.
The Corps’ Arbil branch has done 89 reconstruction projects in Arbil totaling
more than $315 million, officials say.
The orphanage-senior center is being paid for through the Economic Support Fund
of the U.S. Agency for International Development. It is expected to be completed
in September. |
