Two Turkish Soldiers Killed In Northern Kurdistan
Two Turkish soldiers were killed in Northern Kurdistan during
military operations against Kurdish freedom fighters, Turkish army sources
said on Friday.
The army also continued to beef up its presence on the Southern border in an
attempt to prevent Kurdish guerillas crossing into Turkish-occupied
Northern Kurdistan from Southern Kurdistan. Turkey has refused to rule out a
possible cross-border operation to crush the rebels.
One soldier was killed in a clash between Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK)
guerrillas and Turkish troops in Bingol province on Thursday evening, the
sources said.
A second soldier was killed and another wounded in Erzincan province in a
landmine blast, the local governor said.
Dozens of soldiers and paramilitary police have been killed in an escalation of
violence in Turkish-occupied Northern Kurdistan in recent months. The army has
repeatedly called on the government -- which faces elections this month -- to
launch an operation against an estimated 3,000 PKK rebels based in Southern
Kurdistan.
