A group of enraged neo-nationalists in the
northwestern city of Sakarya attempted to lynch two individuals sporting
T-shirts depicting Ahmet Kaya, a late singer who angered nationalists in his
later years for emphasizing his Kurdish background.
News reports said Mehmet Alaca and Senayi Izci were attacked by an angry crowd
on Tuesday. The two men started arguing with a group of young men who were
angered by the Ahmet Kaya pictures on the two workers’ t-shirts. As the debate
heated up, the small group soon swelled into 500 who then attacked the two men.
Izci was severely beaten by the angry group before police arrived and
intervened. The police took him to the local police station. Alaca hid inside a
nearby apartment building to escape the crowd, which gathered in front of the
building. The nationalist group stood there for more than an hour, chanting
slogans against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
