Security Tunnel to Protect Arbil from Al Qaida

Arbil: The capital of Kurdistan differs completely when compared to what is
currently taking place in other regions of Iraq, however strict security
measures are being implemented to keep Arbil safe from car bombs and
infiltrators.
Measures include building a tunnel to segregate the border between Arbil and the
turbulent Mosul and Kirkuk provinces, as well as setting up surveillance
barricades along this tunnel.
In an interview with Arbil's governor, Nawzad Hadi Mawlood, he said, "The tunnel
was built due to some difficulties we are facing related to border control with
Kirkuk and Mosul, especially in the absence of natural impediments and barriers
like high mountains which can protect the city."
Mawlood confirmed that the stability of Kurdistan's territory is under serious
threat.
He said, "The terrorists want to deliver a message that the whole of Iraq is in
a bad situation."
A few days ago, the Al Qaida organisation in Iraq announced that it will form
special battalions in Kurdistan. This statement has prompted stringent security
measures and inspection procedures around vital installations in Arbil, Dohuk
and Sulaimaniyah.
"Intelligence information indicates renewed Al Qaida activity in the Panjwin and
Bayara areas in Sulaimaniyah near the Iraqi-Iranian border," Mawlood said. The
governor added, "Increased security services in Kurdistan include preventive
measures by monitoring the movements of Al Qaida in these two regions and
addressing any penetration or infiltration."
Inspection
Mohammad, an officer at Arbil International hotel told Gulf News, "We took
strict inspection procedures, especially for women fearing that they might carry
explosive belts, but it is implemented ... with a high degree of social
relevance while maintaining the civilised image of Kurdistan."
The security of Kurdistan mainly depends on the cooperation of people. All
strangers, coming from Baghdad or other Iraqi cities, have to carry a security
letter to prevent an investigation and suspicion. Vehicles are subject to the
same measures that are carried out under a reasonable context.
The governor of Arbil confirmed arresting a few suspects on terrorism charges
who were moved to a prison in Mosul.
However, in Kurdistan the name Al Qaida refers to bloody suicide bombings.
Pictures of the devastating explosions in Baghdad, Karbala and Diyala have
raised fears among Kurds and caused them to take increased safety measures. |
