Kurdish rebel group slams Berlin embassy seizure as "terrorism"

ARBIL, The Kurdistan Democratic Party -- one of the two rebel groups which control northern Iraq in defiance of Baghdad -- Wednesday slammed the seizure of Iraq's Berlin embassy by dissidents as "terrorism."

"It was an act of terrorism and we stress that resorting to this sort of action in Europe or anywhere else will do nothing to help the cause of the Iraqi opposition," the rebel group said in a statement from its headquarters here.

"We condemn this action and call on all factions to distance themselves from activities which break the law ... and fall under the rubric of terrorism," the statement said.

German commandos raided the Iraqi embassy building late Tuesday, freeing the charge d'affaires, Shamir Mohammed, and a staff member, both of whom were treated for shock but were otherwise unhurt.

Five men appeared before a Berlin court Wednesday charged with taking part in the hostage-taking. A court spokesman said they were all asylum-seekers.

Both German officials and Iraqi opposition groups said they had no knowledge of any Democratic Iraqi Opposition of Germany, the group which claimed responsibility for the embassy seizure.
