ANAP Figures Call for Release of Kurd MPs
ANAP wants freedom for four imprisoned former DEP deputies
Jan 17, 2002

The Three-party coalition partner ANAP's Diyarbakir Deputy Sebgetullah Seydaoglu said that four former deputies from closed DEP (pro-Kurdish Democratic Party) should be released. Seydaoglu also calls on Sezer to use his amnesty power to give freedom to the imprisoned DEP deputies.

By making a speech in ANAP's Parliamentary Group meeting, Seydaoglu said, "The time of democracy has come to Turkey. I visited four former deputies of the closed DEP in prison. I found them looking much older. I demand freedom for these deputies. These people are patient. That have been in prison for 10 years. I demand from the Turkish Republic to forgive these people. I demand from Sezer to use his amnesty power for these people."

Seydaoglu underlined that the terrorist activities have finished in Eastern Anatolia and stated that he wants the application of the amended DGM (State Security Court) law and new regulations for the period of custody to the people of the region.

ANAP leader and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz stated that the laws accepted by Parliament are valid and applied for the whole of Turkey, nobody can ignore these realities, during his speech in the Parliamentary Group meeting of his party. Yilmaz continues to say, "If these laws are not applied in some places, it is a necessity for Emergency Rule and this rule is also an order of law legislated by Parliament."

Yilmaz also said: "As ANAP, we are in favor of ending the emergency rule as soon as possible. But this is not an issue to be realized just by the demand of ANAP. There are still 400-500 terrorists with their weapons in the region. And also thousands of them based in neighboring countries. Now, there are just four provinces under emergency rule because of the continuation of terrorist threats."
