*U.S.
to Invite Barzani and Talabani To Washington
(The Kurdistan Observer) Jan 30, 2002. The US administration is seeking
to accelerate the reconciliation process between the KDP and PUK following
two years of deadlock in the road of implemntation of the Washington Accord
with the question of the transitional parliament remaining an obstacle,
reported the London Based Arabic newspaper, Al-Hayat, yesterday.
Dr. Burham Salih, the Prime Minister of KRG- Sulaimaniyah told Al-Hayat
that
Washington has asked both parties, the PUK and KDP, to send delegations
made up from leadership members authorized to make decisions to prepare
the arrangement of a meeting among US officials and both Kurdish
leaders, Barzani and Talabani.
Kurdish sources indicated that the slow pace of reconciliation between
the two major political parties of Southern Kurdistan has become unacceptable
to the Americans who are preparing to put together a plan to deal with
the Iraqi
government.
Accourding to Kurdish officials visiting European countries recently,
the European view is edging closer to the American view of how to deal
with Iraq. In this regard, France has informed the Kurds about the
need for Baghdad to allow UN weapons inspectors back into Iraq, to
improve its records in the field of human rights, and to abide by the remaining
UN resolutions in order to avoid US military operations in the future. |
