Four Kurds Jailed In Syria

DAMASCUS, July 24 (AFP) - A Syrian state security court on Sunday sentenced four Kurds to two and a half years in prison for separatist activities, rights lawyer Anwar Bunni said.

The four men, all members of the Democratic Union party, were accused of "belonging to a secret organisation seeking to annex part of Syria to a foreign country".

They were also charged with "damaging relations with a friendly country", referring to neighbouring Turkey where Kurdish militants are seeking self-rule.

Kurds and Islamists form the main opposition groups in Syria, but they are prohibited from assembling because the Syrian government views them as a threat to national security and unity.
