Statement by Ministry of Industry and Energy (KDP) on Electricity Supply
Birayeti

July 8, 2002

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Industry and Energy has made the following statement:

With a view to solving the problem of electricity and taking into consideration the needs of citizens in the governorate of Arbil to have uninstructed power supply, especially during the hot summer season, and in line with an agreement made on 3 July 2002, the regional government of Kurdistan has managed to secure an uninterrupted 80 Megawatt electricity supply from Dukan electricity station to the governorate of Arbil.  In return it will make a monthly payment of 7m dinars to the Al-Sulaymaniyah electricity board.

This electricity supply along with the electricity generated in the governorate of Arbil will be sufficient for Arbil's power needs, including the 4 amperage requirements for households, trade, industry and agriculture sectors a well as government agencies.

Furthermore, with a view to recognizing the economic hardship of citizens in general and to provide support for the poor, and those who are on low income in particular, the regional government has decided to subsidize a substantial part of their electricity charges.

Also, the directorate of electricity in Arbil has decided to make a monthly electricity charge of 60 dinars for uninterrupted 4 amperage and 30 dinars for 2 amperage power supply.

This comes at a time when the cost of electricity incurred by the government from the cost of buying, transfer and distribution of electricity is twice the charges quoted above.

Hence, in order to supply electricity to all citizens of the lovely city of Arbil, the government would like to call upon government agencies, trade, industry and agricultural sectors and all citizens not to waste electricity and only to use it according to their own needs.

Moreover, the directorate of electricity in Arbil has pledged to complete installing circuits systems to all consumers by the end of July, it is expected that then all will enjoy uninterrupted 24 hours electricity supply and they will no longer require generators to supplement their power needs.
