Barzani:  Kurdish MPs Approval Needed For Iraqi Troops In Kurdistan

DUBAI, March 11 (AFP)  Any Iraqi army deployment in Iraqi Kurdistan will in the future require the green light of the Kurdish parliament, Iraqi Kurdish chief Massoud Barzani said in an interview on Al-Arabiya television on Friday.

"Of course, the Iraqi army's entry into Kurdistan will have to be approved by the Kurdish parliament," said Barzani, who heads the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

"The Peshmergas (Kurdish fighters) will be part of the Iraqi army. The Kurds will be part of the Iraqi army. Today, the Iraqi army is different than it used to be," he said.

"If Kurdistan faces an outside threat or a threat that exceeds the capabilities of Kurdistan's domestic security forces, then the Iraqi army will certainly be able to help and to enter" Kurdistan, Barzani said.

"But, in any case, this entry would have to be approved by the Kurdish parliament," he insisted.
