Dead in Clash Between Kurds, Police
Thousands of Kurdish youths put up barricades and
battled police Thursday in a southern Turkish city after authorities
banned Kurds from celebrating their New Year. Two demonstrators were
killed. `They have tried governing this country
with bans and repression,'' Bozlak said. ``But this country belongs to
all of us, and we want to live in freedom.'' |

Welcome to Kurdistan
“We are not in a secure situation,” says Masoud Barzani,
leader of the Kurdish Democratic Party, or KDP, which controls two
thirds of Iraqi Kurdistan. “Our future lies with Iraq—but a democratic,
federal Iraq where we are not second-class citizens.” In some ways,
Kurdistan is just a declaration away from independence—it has its own
army, flag, TV stations, school curriculum and language, plus a
WELCOME TO KURDISTAN sign on the border. |
