Turkey stepped up oppression since the EU labelled Kurds as terrorists

Turkish Government has been conducting military operations continuously since the EU put Kurds onto the list of terrorist organizations.

25 children are facing charges of 3 years and 9 months’ chimprisonment for demanding education in Kurdish.

The Turkish military has been conducting operations continuously in Kurdistan (in Turkey and Iraq) since 3 May 2002. In Tunceli, the operations have been going on for two months. It has been reported that many people were killed during the clashes on June 7. This operation includes Dersim (Tunceli), Kutudere, Demenan, Sibirya, Kirmizidag, and Resdere areas, and it is expanding. At the same time, military operations continue in the border district of Hakkari-Yuksekova. It¹s reported that during the operation civilians and villagers, who were grazing their animals, were shot at or arrested by the military authorities. The operation, which is carried out by the military commander of Yuksekova, was directed from Onbasilar district towards the Iranian border as of the morning of May 29.

Demanding penalty for children

27 children between the ages of 11 and 18 are on trial at Diyarbakir State Security Court(DGM) because of demonstrating for education in Kurdish. Their lawyer Tahir Elci, who is the Head of the Diyarbakir Bar, expressed that this case is against the Constitution and the UN Children Rights Agreement. The children on trial, the youngest at the age of 11, are facing charges of 3 years and 9 months¹ imprisonment for helping PKK. On the other hand, Tufan Akcan, who gave a Kurdish name to his daughter, and the officer, who gave the official identification, have been taken to the Court of First Instance and the State Security Court (DGM). In Bayramoglu village, Kocalak Koc, who applied to Public Registration Office to give his children the Kurdish names Rojin and Rojhad, has been prosecuted. As the Turkish press published before, Kazim Rustu Yucelen, the Minister of Internal Affairs, sent an order to the governors that 600 Kurdish names have been banned and legal action will be taken against the people who use those names. Turkish authorities cannot bear anything positive for Kurds. Yesilada Republic Prosecutor filed a case against the economist Atilla Yesilada for addressing the KADEK President Abdullah Ocalan with ’Mr.’.

Turkish Government has been continuing the operations in and out of its borders, trampling on the Copenhagen Criteria and Human Rights in front of the whole world. The silence of the European countries to this situation is encouraging the Turkish Government. If European Union still wants democracy in Turkey and wants to solve the Kurdish question in peace, then it must not be silent and must take the Kurds out of the list.
