Politics , not polemics, the right way to safeguard the interests of people of Kurdistan

It seems that the 11 years of self-administration in the de facto government of south Kurdistan ( Synonym: Iraqi Kurdistan), have brought some political experience and maturity, to the way the Kurdish leaders brace themselves for the ultimate change-of-regime in Iraq.

On the internal level, the two major Kurdish parties KDP and PUK, besides the other political parties which represents the interests of different ethnic and religious communities that live in Kurdistan with Kurds ( with the nominal exception of the so-called Turkuman front, an controversial organization with direct links to foreign powers, namely the Turkish military and secret service, this Organization does not hesitate to show its hate of the successes that  Kurds have achieved and its animosity to the aspirations of all people of Kurdistan, including Turkomans, and also a fundamentalist  militia linked to Al-Kaida, called Ansar-Al-Islam, which operates on the border to Iran)), these parties have  been striving to build the cornerstones of a democratic and civic society unforeseen in the region, with unprecedented freedom of expression, freedom of political organization, the freedom to educate and broadcast and
publish newspapers and periodicals not only for Kurds, but also for the minorities that co-habit Kurdistan like Assyrians and Turkomans, What is almost unique to the region. The most positive achievement to my mind , is the rapprochement between the two parties to solve and remove the bitter results of the conflict between the two parties 1992-1996 and to start a civilized dialogue with a lot of patience and proficiency without the polemics of old days.

On the regional level there is undoubtedly feverish attempts by the regional powers to meddle in he internal affairs of Kurdistan and sow the seeds of conflict between the political forces of Kurdistan ( Intimidation by Ansar-Al-Islam and allegations by Turkuman Front), these regional powers either threatening the Kurdish administration directly with military intervention , in case the People of Kurdistan get their legitimate rights in the post-Saddam Iraq, or are trying to create hate and mistrust between the different ethnic groups in Kurdistan. The most successful way to thwart these attempts is to continue the democratic process in Kurdistan, continue the peaceful dialogue between political forces in Iraqi Kurdistan and to continue active dialogue with Iraqi intellectuals and opposition forces about the future of Iraq and the establishment of a democratic, pluralistic, federalist and constitutional administration in Iraq with guarantees for all ethnic and religious factions and above all equality and protection of all the people before the law. again here is the calculated political  effort and not polemics or succumbing to the provocation of  hostile neighbours should be the rule.

On the international level, and especially the relation with the American administration, one can only praise the conjoint diplomatic efforts of both KDP and PUK to present a unified approach in dealing with Europe and USA, This approach which has concentrated on the political and democratic achievements in Iraqi Kurdistan, the rightful request of iron-clad guarantees from the American administration to safeguard the current situation of self-government in Kurdistan without jeopardizing the territorial integrity of the state of Iraq, and to insure that the future Iraq will be a federalistic
democratic state with equal rights and representations for all people of Iraq. The Americans are beginning to understand the statement which we Kurds have been saying all the time, that the Iraqi Kurds are the key to stability and democracy in Iraq.  The Kurds were always seen , even by their enemies to be an integral and important of the political spectrum in their country, their past struggle , the atrocities they suffered and their commitment to a dignified and peaceful future for all people of Iraq should make them a key player in the shaping of the future of Iraq. The lobbying of all Kurdish
intellectuals and political parties must continue in USA and Europe to get more support and understanding for the legitimate and long-suppressed aspirations of the biggest nation without a state in the middle- east.
