Dr. Salih Continues Diplomatic Tour with Visits to Finland and Turkey

The Kurdistan Regional Prime Minister Dr. Barham Salih, accompanied by senior Patriotic Union of Kurdistan officials, Arsalan Bayiz and Emad Ahmad, held talks with the Deputy Turkish Foreign Minister, Logos Ziyal, and a number of  Turkish officials as part of his current diplomatic tour covering Sweden, Finland and Turkey. The discussions in Ankara included issues of bilateral relations and situation in the region. In additions he held meetings with American and British diplomats based in Ankara.

On June 18, Dr. Salih and his delegation met with the Foreign Minister of Finland, Erkki Tuomioja in Helsinki. The Prime Minister called the Finish Government to support the people of Kurdistan in their quest for national rights, democracy within the framework of a federal, parliamentary and pluralistic Iraq. The Foreign Minister affirmed his government’s backing for the legitimate rights of the Kurdish people in the sphere of human rights and democracy, and the continued international protection for the Kurdistan region as part of its support for the existing democratic experiment in the area. The KRG Prime Minister and his delegation held a series of meetings with Finish parliamentarians among them the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Antila Sirkka-liisa , the chairman of Foreign Affairs Committee, Lissa Jaakonsaari, the chairman of the Human Rights Committee and other high ranking members of the Coordination Committee of political parliamentary groups. Dr. Salih briefed the Finish parliamentarians about the accomplishments of the people of Kurdistan region in the last eleven years and the evolving efforts to bring about political, economic and social reforms in order to achieve a proper civil society. The parliamentarian lauded the policies of the KRG to bring about democratic process. Dr. Salih extended an invitation, from the Kurdish leader Jalal Talabani, to the Finish parliament to send a delegation to the Kurdistan region. During the visit to Finland, Dr. Salih participated in a town hall meeting with members of the Kurdish-Finish community in Helsinki.
