Kurdish Source Denies Reports On US Plan To Establish Kurdish State In Northern Iraq
Sharq Awsat

June 28, 2002

An informed Kurdish source has denied the existence of a US plan to establish a Kurdish state in northern Iraq that Washington has requested Turkey to facilitate its implementation in exchange for Ankara receiving part of the Iraqi oil that is produced from the oilfields in Kirkuk.

Commenting to Al-Sharq al-Awsat on what appeared in a Turkish newspaper yesterday regarding the issue, the Kurdish source said that this was a mere lie. He added:  The Turkish newspaper and the Turkish Government know that the Americans are not contemplating such a project and they know that we have not demanded such a thing because it is unrealistic.

The source said that the Turkish newspaper cited a secret government document that was distributed to the main Turkish circles, adding that this came within the framework of the Turkish lies and exaggerations, which aim to distort the situation in Kurdistan and apply pressure on the United States to solve Turkey's economic, financial, and political problems in exchange for Ankara giving facilities to Washington if the latter decides to carry out operations in Iraq to replace the current government.

The Turkish newspaper Yeni Safak yesterday said that Turkey discussed the above issue with Syria and Iran and added that the secret government memo stressed Ankara's desire to link Iraq economically to Turkey in the future.
