Kurdistan Newsline

June 6, 2002

Sulaimani, June 5—Two new ministers were sworn in the Kurdistan Regional Government cabinet: Faraydun Kader as Minister of Interior, and Abdul Razak Faily as Minister of Cooperation and Relations. The Kurdish leader Jalal Talabani, in his capacity as the president of the region, accepted the resignation of the Minister of Interior Nowshirwan Fuad Masti for health reasons, and the relinquishing of the acting portfolio of the Minister of Cooperation & Relations by the Prime Minister Dr. Barham Salih.

The new Minister of Interior Faraydun Kader is one of the founder members of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and a member of its current leadership. He is a veteran Peshmerga volunteer who as field commander engaged the Iraqi Army units in many encounters during the combat period against the invading forces. He was one of the Peshmerga field commanders who led the brief liberation of the city of Kirkuk during the popular Rapareen uprising in the aftermath of the Gulf War. His previous responsibilities included: Director of PUK’s Information Bureau, head of Sulaimani and Badinan party organizations, governor of Sulaimani and minister without portfolio in KRG’s third cabinet.  The new minister faces the immediate challenge of providing vigorous leadership to combat terrorist threats and improving overall security and policing services in the region through better training, improved intelligence, and establishing an effective mobile police unit and improving emergency security services.

Abdul Razak Faili, the new Minister of Cooperation & Relations is a founder member of the PUK. He has extensive experience in representing the Kurdistan cause internationally and has been assigned many diplomatic and information missions by the PUK in the past.
