Syria Releases Seven Detained Kurds
DAMASCUS, Nov 2 (AFP) Syrian authorities
have freed seven Kurds who were arrested several months ago for belonging to a
"secret organization," a rights group said Wednesday.
The seven Kurds, who included three women, had been arrested for belonging to
"a secret organization aiming to annex part of Syrian territory to a foreign
country," said Ammar Qorabi, spokesman for the Arab Organization for Human
Rights.
"This measure must be followed by the liberation of all political detainees,
particularly at this time of increased pressure due toprosecutor Detlev Mehlis's
report," the group said.
The UN report, which was released last month, found evidence of top-level
Syrian involvement in the February assassination of Lebanese ex-premier Rafiq
Hariri.
A separate Syrian rights group, the Syrian Human Rights Organization, issued
a statement asking Syrian authorities to "free actor Mohammed Kutaysheh who is
still being detained even though he has served his time."
Kutaysheh was sentenced to three years in prison by the state security court
for posting "lying information" on the Internet. |
