The Green Party Welcomes Peace Agreement in Iraqi Kurdistan

Sep 9, 2002

News of the peace developments in Iraqi Kurdistan between the two largest parties Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and Kurdistan Patriotic Union (PUK) reached the Green Party today

The news is very pleasing. We congratulate the Kurdish leaders for this victory. We have in our meetings with the Kurdish leaders emphasized the importance of peace and consider that peace is necessary and a prerequisite for increased international support for the people of Kurdistan, said Peter Eriksson, leader of the Green Party.

The peace agreement between KDP and PUK is an important and positive step towards stability and security in Iraqi Kurdistan. The fact that the Kurdish Regional Parliament is gathered as a unity deserves commendation. The Green Party hopes that the peace agreement will be followed by a constructive collaboration between all democratic parties in Iraqi Kurdistan. Peace between the Kurdish parties can also guarantee a stronger influence in a Federal Iraq, said Jabar Amin, Party Committee Member and candidate of Parliament.
