An open letter to President Bush and Koffi Annan from KCC-CA Kurdish Community Center of California Sep 10, 2002 To the secretary
General of the UN The Kurdish Community of California is deeply concerned about Turkey’s military invasion and unmerited threats to Iraqi-Kurdistan. Following Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) proposal of a new constitution that advocates a federal, pluralistic, and parliamentary solution for the Kurdish predicament in Iraq, the Turkish government has overtly revealed its hatred towards the Kurdish nation, regardless of where they may reside, by occupying specific regions under the control of the Kurdistan Regional Government. Recently, Turkey’s Chief of Staff, General Hilmi Ozkok, acknowledged the Turkish military invasion in Iraqi-Kurdistan, and Turkey’s Defense Minister, Sabahattin Cakmakoglu, openly threatened to interfere in their affairs with use of force. The Turkish invasion and threats are of major insult to humanity and violate Articles 1, 2, 3, 5, and 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that was adapted on December 10, 1948 by the General Assembly of the United Nations, and various articles of the convention on Territorial Integrity, Civil, and Political Rights, to which Turkey is a signatory. Iraqi-Kurdistan is one of the few legitimate democratic practices in the Middle East; it is an obligation for all peace loving and democratic nations to safe-guard the current democratic experience, where the proven success of the democratic governance in "Iraqi-Kurdistan" can be used as a blue-print for the rest of the Middle East. It is of crucial significance that Turkey would respect the territorial integrity of Iraqi-Kurdistan and withdraw its military forces immediately; Turkey must be pressured to start respecting the legitimate basis for the Kurds right to self-determination: Article 1(2), 55, 56, and 73 of the United Nations Charters and resolution 1514 (XV) of the General Assembly. The need is legitimate and appropriate. We trust that you and your Administration will work sympathetically towards all the oppressed nations including the Kurds.
Sincerely, Foreign Affairs representative-Delovan Barwari Kurdish Community Center of California.
