Statement by the Left Party of Sweden

To: Mr. Masud Barzani, leader of Kurdistan Democratic Party

Mr. Jalal Talabani, Secretary General of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan

It is with greatest satisfaction that we hear about the agreement between Mr. Masud Barzani and Mr. Jalal Talabani, signed in Saladdin on the 7th and 8th of September 2002. The democratic process in Iraqi Kurdistan has taken a big step forward with the agreement. We look forward to the convening of the Kurdistan National Assembly representing KDP, PUK and the Assyrians on October 4th this year. We appreciate the fact that the participation of the minorities and various Kurdistan political parties in the democratic process is stressed.

We also would like to stress the importance of the participation of the women of Iraqi Kurdistan in the democratic process. The women in Iraqi Kurdistan represent half of the population and it is very important that the women are part of the building of a democracy from the beginning. We welcome the recently passed legislation by KRG to abolish lesser punishment when honour reasons are claimed and congratulate the women of Iraqi Kurdistan. This is a big step forward regarding human rights and will serve as a guiding principle for other countries facing similar problems.

The agreement in Saladdin is especially important during times like these, when the USA is threatening to attack Iraq. The people of Kurdistan are surrounded by enemies and the only solution is to keep united and fight for democracy. International guarantees for the security of Iraqi Kurdistan and its people are necessary.

The Left Party has always supported the Kurdish people. We are the party in the Swedish Parliament that over the years most strongly has supported the human rights of the Kurdish People. That is a support that the people of Iraqi Kurdistan can count on.

Once again we would like to extend our congratulations on the results of the very important meeting between Mr. Masud Barzani and Mr. Jalal Talabani.
