Gurel: We have a sufficient existence in Northern Iraq TDN
Sep 11, 2002 Mete Belovacikli Foreign Minister Sukru Sina Gurel said: "We have completed all our preparations in Northern Iraq, taking all expected and unexpected possibilities into consideration." In response to a question related to the number of Turkish military in Northern Iraq, Gurel stated, "We have a sufficient number in the region." Giving an interview to the Turkish Daily News (TDN) Gurel stated: "So, Turkey is completely ready diplomatically and militarily. We follow a coherent path in an chaotic and inconsistent environment and we always declare our opinions clearly." Warning Iraq Kurdistan Democratic Party (IKDP) leader Massoud Barzani, Minister Gurel continued to say that: "We are going into an environment of instability. Somebody may consider increasing their voice to receive as much as possible in this environment of chaos. Barzani may be one of them. We communicated our opinion that he is wrong. We also expect similar and stronger warnings from allies having relations with this region and various factions in this region, especially from the United States." As related to the allegations that Turkey will enter into Northern Iraq during a possible operation against Iraq, Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Gurel stated, "If Northern Iraq is important for our security and it hosts some threats, our close interest towards this region will continue."
