Barzani
Asserts Kurds Will Not Give Up Kirkuk
Kurdistan Observer Sep 16, 2002 The President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Massoud Barzani, has disclosed that while the US has not informed the Iraqi opposition parties about the date of any military attack against Iraq, the US has stated its decision to topple Saddam's regime. In an interview with the Kuwaiti daily al-Qabas, Barzani denied that the liberated areas of Southern Kurdistan have three airports that are currently operational, noting that there are two or three runways where planes do not land and their capacity to support aircraft is not ensured. On the issue of relations of Southern Kurdistan with Iran and Turkey, President Barzani warned both Iran and Turkey that intervention in Southern Kurdistan and Iraq in the event of a US strike would be "costly" and backfire on their own security and stability. When asked about the status of the city of Kirkuk, Barzani asserted that Southern Kurdistan will not give up Kirkuk in the framework of a new federated state of Iraq.
